[rtl]Arbil (Kurdistan 24) - The head of the caretaker government Haider Abadi, a number of senior police officers in the southern city of Basra, against the backdrop of violent protests in the city of oil for days.
The spokesman for the Joint Operations Command, Brigadier General Yahya Rasool, said in a statement that "a decision issued by the higher authorities to appoint Lieutenant General Rashid Fleih in the post of commander of operations Basra, replacing the team article Jamil al-Shammari."
"Basra police chief Major General Jassem al-Saadi and a number of officers in the provincial police, including the official of the Barda'iya district in the center of the city of Basra, where the Iranian consulate was located, have been dismissed," the BBC quoted an official source familiar with the incident as saying.
Abadi earlier ordered the transfer of security units responsible for the protection of the Iranian government and consulate in Basra to investigate "for not fulfilling their duties to provide the necessary protection."
Iraqi protesters stormed the building of the Iranian consulate in Basra on Friday night and set fire to it completely, chanting slogans calling on Iran to desist from interfering with their affairs and burning a number of government and party headquarters.
Basra has been witnessing violent demonstrations for five days, demanding protesters to improve infrastructure and reduce the spread of corruption and provide job opportunities for the unemployed.
At least 13 protesters have been killed since the protests began days ago.
He announced a curfew in the city began from 4 pm on Saturday as the Iraqi parliament held an emergency session to discuss the unrest in Basra.
The demonstrators did not seem to have committed themselves to calling upon the Shiite cleric Ali al-Sistani to avoid burning public and private buildings in their city.
Anger is brewing among the population as their politicians try to form a government on a very difficult task, with Tehran and Washington vying to be their allies' allies.
In a Friday sermon followed by one of his aides, al-Sistani accused Iraqi politicians of allowing foreigners to intervene and said the new government should be different, not as it was previously adopted.
