An official in the Foreign Ministry claimed that the IAEA program to monitor accidents and trafficking in radioactive materials is at risk by Russia because of the Litvinenko case.

US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Ford told a conference on the fight against the smuggling of radioactive materials that "the purpose of this program is to monitor the atomic and radioactive materials beyond official control," noting that "the program faces a threat by Russia after the inclusion of its database information For the Kremlin's use of radioactive polonium for poisoning (former Russian intelligence officer) Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006. "

The Russian official did not elaborate on the threat posed by Russia to the program.

Ford said that in the former Soviet Union there had been several cases of smuggling of radioactive materials, including in Georgia and Moldova in the past decade.

"There have been at least two incidents in which Chechen terrorist groups in Russia have tried to use so-called" dirty bombs "containing radioactive materials, even if they do not.

"We have lost the precise knowledge of the amount of radioactive and nuclear material leaking to the black market," he
said, adding that Litvinenko had fled to Britain after his break-up and obtained British citizenship. 2006, but he soon died mysteriously.

The tests revealed the presence of a large amount of radioactive polonium-210 in his body and linked the British investigation to his death in a meeting a few days earlier with Russian citizens, prompting London to accuse the Russian authorities of being behind the liquidation. Moscow

rejects the accusations, noting that the issue has been politicized, not to mention the lack of the British investigation of any transparency.
