Republicans are ready to support the Trump candidate to head the US Supreme Court
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US Republicans have gained confidence that Democratic presidential nominee Donald Trump could win the Senate's support after two members of the party reacted positively to an FBI report on charges of sexual misconduct.
Democrats condemned the White House report to the Senate Judiciary Committee in the middle of the night, describing it as an attempt to improve a narrow picture that ignores important witnesses.
Thousands of anti-Kavanu protesters rallied in front of the Supreme Court and entered a Senate building holding banners reading "Believe the victims." Hundreds of protesters, including actress Amy Schumer, were arrested.
But Republicans went ahead with plans for a major procedural vote on Friday and a final vote on Saturday to confirm Cavani's appointment.
But the timing of the vote could be disrupted by Republican Sen. Steve Dennes, whose office said on Thursday he planned to attend his daughter's wedding in Montana on Saturday, preventing him from casting his vote.
Republicans have a slim majority in the Senate with 51 seats versus 49 seats. If Denes gets out of the picture, the party will need every other Republican vote to support Cavanaugh's nomination in Saturday's vote in anticipation of all Democrats' objections.
No Republican said he would object to Cavanaugh's appointment, although four did not.
The comments of two of them, Jeff Flick and Susan Collins, indicated that the FBI report may have eased their concerns.
Trump wrote on Twitter that the FBI report showed that the allegations attributed to Cavanaugh "are never based on any basis."
