Korean officials and a United Nations delegation in the border village of Panmunjom held talks on disarmament from the fortified border area that separates the Korean peninsula along 250 kilometers.

"The first meeting between officials from the South, the North and the United Nations on the evacuation of the joint security zone will take place today in Panmunjom," the South Korean Defense Ministry said.

Panmunjom is the only border area of 250 km between the two countries where their troops are located in directly opposite locations.

The area was considered a neutral site until a fatal killing in 1976 when two US soldiers accompanied by workers assigned to cut a tree in the demilitarized zone were killed by North Korean military personnel.

The two Koreas have been at war in the absence of a peace deal since 1953 and agreed to take measures to ease tension on the border at a summit of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-non last month in Pyongyang.

The two sides have recently begun demining the Common Security Zone, where meetings are normally held, and will withdraw "useless" surveillance equipment from the area as demining ends.
