A group of Iranian retirees gathered Tuesday in front of the budget and planning organization in the capital Tehran to protest against poor living conditions, the official IRNA news agency reported.
The Iranian agency said that the protesters, who are from various government institutions, raised at their rally protest signs stating that the low salaries and their existence under the poverty line, in light of the high cost of the country, especially in the past six months.
"We are fed up with poverty," said one of the retired teachers who took part in the protest in front of the budget and planning building of the government. "The salary I receive after 30 years of struggle in education is not enough for ten days a month, what should we do in the rest of the days?"
The retired protesters demanded strict implementation of the country's service management law and "extra insurance" to improve their economic situation.
The protest was attended by a large number of retired teachers who assert that their salaries are insufficient, as they are not like the salaries of teachers who are still in service, and not like the rest of the retirees in other ministries.
As a result of the lack of adequate water for agriculture, many farmers left their land after drought.
Iranian teachers have also entered a general strike two days ago, where they go to their workplaces but do not enter classes to teach their students, and are confined to the office of school principals or restrooms.
Teachers object to low salaries and poor purchasing power, especially as prices rise and the local currency depreciates against foreign currencies.
The strike is not the only strike in Iran in recent months. Various Iranian groups and factions have entered successive strikes, such as truck drivers, shopkeepers, farmers and others, and finally the teachers strike, which coincided with the beginning of the school year. All strikes on economic backgrounds, as opposed to vigils and demonstrations that are based on political and human rights.
