Hours after his swearing-in, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi said yesterday that Iraq would give priority to its own interests and independence in terms of helping the United States in the application of sanctions on Iran. He told a press conference in Baghdad that his government wanted to keep Iraq out of any interference in the affairs of a neighboring country or any other country.
The United Nations welcomed the Iraqi parliament's confidence in the government of Adel Abdul Mahdi, and expressed the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jan Kubic, "appreciated the efforts made by outgoing Prime Minister Haider Abadi during the last parliamentary session." He also welcomed the approval of the House of Representatives on the government program and «partial formation of the new cabinet», expressing «deep concern about the absence of female representation among the ministers announced so far».
The Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi was sworn in with more than half of his government in the early hours of yesterday morning, and the parliament decided to postpone the vote on the rest of the candidates, and the portfolios of the interior and defense, to the sixth of next month.
The session of the House of Representatives witnessed sharp debates between deputies from the "reform bloc" led by cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and parliament speaker Mohamed Halabousi on a number of points regarding the candidates of the government of Abdul-Mahdi, especially the lack of scrutiny in their names by the committees of integrity, accountability and justice (de-Baathification) Or the disclosure of their criminal record, which led to the withdrawal of the bloc from the voting session, before returning to it by stipulating the withdrawal of the nomination of some names, notably Faleh Fayyad (Ministry of the Interior) and Qusay al-Suhail (Higher Education and Scientific Research).
And raised the way to pass the government, such as the abstention of the deputies of Basra to vote for Ghata. The MP for the province, Faleh al-Khazali, in a press conference with a number of colleagues that «the blocks did not see the biographies of candidates and were not audited their names of integrity and accountability and justice and there are clear dictates in the nomination of names». He added that «the deputies of Basra, decided not to vote for this government, and call on the blocs to review their position and reconsider the selection of candidates» for the new government. "We have not seen the real representation of Basra." Considered that this «represents an injustice to four million citizens», referring to the «clear marginalization of the province of political forces».
The member of the «Building Alliance» MP Hassan Shaker Odeh that «the voting session was marred by some of the problems surrounding the ministers and this is normal but did not rise to the withdrawal of some blocks». He pointed out that «the next voting phase will pass most of the candidates named in the list of prime minister». However, he added: "We have full confidence in the passing of Faleh al-Fayadh as minister of the interior portfolio." He pointed out that the parliament session "exceeded the constitutional obstacle and became Abdul Mahdi as prime minister after there were fears of not passing the government and enter the political process in a dark tunnel."
MP Majid Shankali of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (Massoud Barzani) said in a statement that «the Kurdish component did not get the full electoral entitlement in the new government».
