(AFP) - The Pentagon may send thousands more troops to the US-Mexico border, a US official was quoted by AFP as saying.
The statement came after US President Donald Trump warned a convoy of immigrants from Central America heading for the southern border of the United States that the army was waiting for them.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that 5,000 troops would be deployed along the southern border.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said 5,000 troops would be sent, but said planning was still under way and no final decisions had been made.
US officials said last week that about 800 troops would be sent to the border with Mexico to provide assistance - especially logistical support - to border guards.
In recent weeks, Trump pointed to the need for more troops to tighten security on the border and politically exploited the issue of an immigrant convoy, mainly of Hondurans, slowly approaching north through Mexico.
