The United States and South Korea will begin limited military exercises on Monday in talks with North Korea, days after Pyongyang threatened to resume its nuclear program if international pressure did not recede.
The Korean maritime exchange program was part of the indefinite postponement in June after US President Donald Trump met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore and vowed to end the joint US-South Korean military exercises, which the North has repeatedly criticized.
A South Korean defense ministry spokesman confirmed that a round of exercises would begin near the southern city of Pohang without media coverage.
Some 500 US and South Korean marines will take part in the exercises, the South Korean Yonhap News Agency reported.
North Korea warned on Friday it could resume its nuclear program if Washington did not abandon its campaign of "maximum pressure" and sanctions against Pyongyang.
"Improved relations and sanctions do not match," the Korean Central News Agency quoted a Foreign Ministry official in Pyongyang as saying. "The United States believes that its 'sanctions and pressures' that many talk about will lead to 'nuclear disarmament' '. We can not prevent ourselves from ridiculing this foolish idea. "
North Korea has not tested nuclear weapons or ballistic missiles for nearly a year, saying it has closed its nuclear test site with plans to dismantle several other facilities.
