Washington opposes proposal to form a European army
The US State Department confirmed that the United States is opposed to any actions that might contribute to the weakening of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
"NATO is a stable institution supported by the US government and many other countries for many years, and we do not want to weaken them," State Department spokeswoman Heather Noiret said.
She also pointed out that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Derrion discussed the issue of strengthening NATO at a recent meeting on the sidelines of World War I events in Paris.
"NATO will become stronger when all members assume greater responsibility. "We have seen how many countries have taken this issue seriously. They made a significant contribution by allocating part of their national output to strengthening NATO's common defense."
"We have a close alliance with France," Noiret said of French President Emmanuel Macaron's proposal for a European army. Is one of the oldest and most important allies, and nothing has changed in this relationship. "
McCron had proposed the formation of a NATO-independent European army that could defend Europe "in the face of threats."
US President Donald Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the French proposal, saying it was "very humiliating," while Russian President Vladimir Putin also strongly supported the need to create a unified space from Lisbon to Vladivostok in the far east of Russia.
