The administration of US President Donald Trump plans to brief members of the Senate next week on sanctions against Saudi Arabia over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, The Hill newspaper reported.
"It will be really important, I am not sure about sanctions, but the case (Khashoggi's death) is not over," a Senate source told the newspaper.
The title of the meeting is the war in Yemen, but it will also raise the question of the role of the Saudi authorities in the killing of Khashoggi, who was resident in the United States, and the possibility of passing the Penal Code against Riyadh and preventing the sale of weapons to it during the last congressional sessions of the year. As well as the possibility of discussing US-Russian relations.
The newspaper added that Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo and Defense James Matisse will hold a briefing, but did not specify a date.
The US president has repeatedly stressed that the United States will remain "a close partner of the kingdom as a great ally against Iran in the interests of the United States, Israel and other US partners in the region."
However, Trump pledged to consider the measures proposed by Congress against Saudi Arabia "provided that it guarantees the absolute security of the United States."
