The United States on Thursday offered parts of what it said were Iranian weapons that were held by gunmen in Yemen and Afghanistan in a continuation of the approach taken by the administration of US President Donald Trump to press Tehran to limit its regional activities.
The second such offer from the Pentagon to cut off what is said to be Iranian weapons, many handed over to Saudi Arabia, with growing concerns in Congress of US military support for the Saudi-led coalition in the civil war in Yemen, which caused a humanitarian crisis on wide range.
If it turns out that Iran is already sending weapons to Yemen, Afghanistan and other countries, it would be in violation of United Nations resolutions.
Reuters was given advance access to the hangar of military aircraft at the joint Anacostia Bowling base on the outskirts of Washington, where the Pentagon offered shrapnel from weapons and explained the reasons for its conclusion that it came from Iran.
"We do not want to have doubts around the world that this is a priority for the United States and that it is in the international interest to address it," said Katie Wellbarger, the first deputy secretary of defense for international security.
The offer is the second in the past year and comes as part of government efforts to implement Trump's policy of tougher approaches to Tehran. Trump pulled the United States out of Iran's nuclear deal and re-imposed sanctions for reasons including its regional activities, which he described as "malicious."
Iran has denied supplying the Huthis in Yemen with such weapons, calling the Pentagon's offer "fabricated".
* Weapons to Yemen
The Pentagon gave a detailed explanation of why he believed the pieces were Iranian weapons, referring to what he said were slogans of Iranian companies on parts of weapons and the unique nature of Iranian weapons designs.
The United States admitted that it could not determine the exact time of transfer of those weapons to the Houthis and, in some cases, could not also determine the time of their use. There was no way to verify independently the country of origin of such weapons and where they were deployed and used.
The parts of the weapons included a surface-to-air missile (S-2), which the Pentagon said was seized by the Saudi government earlier this year on its way to the Houthis in Yemen.
The Pentagon cited the slogan of an Iranian defense company in the section on the warhead, which was not presented, as well as Persian-language writing on the missile, among the evidence that the weapons were Iranian.
A US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged that the Pentagon did not know whether the Houthis had already used the missiles before.
Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa, have fired dozens of rockets into Saudi Arabia in recent months as part of a three-year-old conflict that is widely seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Under a UN resolution to approve Iran's nuclear deal signed with world powers, Tehran is banned from supplying, selling and transferring arms abroad without the approval of the UN Security Council. A separate United Nations resolution on Yemen also prohibits the supply of arms to the Houthis.
War in Afghanistan
The United States has long accused Iran of supplying weapons to Taliban militants in Afghanistan. In October, Washington targeted two individuals linked to the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards with sanctions to provide material and financial support to the Taliban.
The Pentagon offered a number of Fajr rockets and said Tehran had supplied the Taliban with them. He added that the evidence that these missiles are Iranian is the presence of unique marks on the missiles in addition to the way they are painted.
It is known that the Taliban are buying weapons from the black market and defense officials have not been able to explain why they were sure the missiles were not bought by the Taliban themselves.
