Diplomatic sources confirmed that the United States is no longer seeking to hold the fifth annual meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss human rights violations in North Korea.
The sources pointed out that the reason for the decline of Washington is due to lack of sufficient support for its move, because holding such a meeting requires the approval of at least 9 of the 15 members of the Security Council.
The sources said that China has failed over the past four years to prevent such meetings, but this time the US proposal for the meeting was approved by only eight members of the Council.
In a letter to the UN Security Council, North Korea last week accused the United States of "resorting to provocations in its attempt to hold the meeting, despite efforts by Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump to disarm the Korean Peninsula."
Pyongyang rejects accusations of human rights violations and stresses that the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country is due to sanctions imposed since 2006 over its missile and nuclear programs.
