"The mechanism the European Union plans to continue to buy oil from Iran despite US sanctions may be ready before the end of the year," said EU Foreign Minister Federica Mugherini.
"I expect that this mechanism will be formed in the coming weeks, which means before the end of this year," said Mugereeni, according to Agence France-Presse after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
"I do not want to reveal the details, but the work is progressing well. It is up to the three EU countries - France, Germany and the United Kingdom - to sign the nuclear deal with Tehran to do so."
"The goal is to set up as soon as possible," Mujerini said. "A solution must be found to the technical complexities posed by the mechanism."
For his part, the representative of one of the three countries of the Agency that "discussions continue on the specific form of this mechanism and its location and personality, which will be on top, stressing that" at the current stage has not decided anything. "
The mechanism is supposed to be a "private purpose company" that manages the money paid for the purchase of oil, meaning that it will pay the money to those selling Iran products in the form of a clearing house.
The Europeans do not rule out the possibility of opening the mechanism to other countries that have decided to defy US sanctions, especially China, India and Turkey.
The project angers the administration, with Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo warning Europeans several times of any attempt to circumvent US sanctions on Iran in November.
