The US Senate on Thursday unanimously adopted a decision to hold Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman responsible for the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.
The resolution - adopted by an oral vote - states that Congress "believes that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is responsible for the killing of Khashoggi," and stressed that Saudi Arabia should be held accountable to anyone involved in his death.
Despite the strength of the resolution, which was supported by Democrats and Republicans, it remains symbolic, because its future remains uncertain, as no date has been set for a vote in the House of Representatives.
It is not yet clear whether the next House of Representatives - controlled by Democrats - will vote on this resolution, and it must be signed by US President Donald Trump to enter into force.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, Senator Bob Korker, presented the draft Senate resolution earlier Thursday.
Korker said the bill - which was contributed by eight other Republicans - emphasizes accountability of those involved in the crime of liquidation Khashoggi.
The move was a strong political message to Riyadh and a rebuke to the White House after Trump rejected a CIA assessment of Mohammed bin Salman's involvement in Khashoggi's death.
