WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Foreign powers, including Russia, China and Iran, sought to influence the mid-term elections in 2018, but there is no evidence of a breakthrough in the US election system, said Dan Coates, director of national intelligence.

Koets added that the intelligence services did not assess the impact of external influence efforts on the election results.

The findings came in a report by Coates to US President Donald Trump and US agencies involved in electoral security as required by an executive order signed by Trump in September.

It was announced that intervention in the elections was a national emergency following an intelligence assessment that Russia had carried out a process to influence the Trump presidential election in 2016 against his Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.

Russia has denied intervention in the 2016 election.

"This time, intelligence agencies do not have intelligence reports indicating any complacency in our country's electoral infrastructure that would have prevented voting, altered votes or disrupted the ability to count votes," Coates said in a statement on the 2018 election report.

"The activity we saw was in line with what we exchanged in the weeks leading up to the election. Russia and other countries, including China and Iran, have carried out impact activities and message campaigns aimed at the United States to promote their strategic interests."

Coates did not elaborate on the details of the external influence, saying the intelligence services did not assess their impact on voters.
