(Reuters) - Major General Tamir Hayman, head of Israeli military intelligence, predicted an "important change" in 2019 in Syria.

"The presence of Iran as stability returns to Syria under a Russian umbrella is something we are watching closely," Hayman said.

Israel has also been monitoring Iranian behavior since Trump announced in May his country's withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran in 2015 and the re-imposition of US sanctions.

The agreement imposes restrictions on Iranian nuclear projects that could be used to make bombs, despite Iran's denials of any plans to do so.

Trump, backed by Israel, says the restrictions imposed by the agreement are insufficient.

"Our assessment is that Iran will aggressively seek to maintain the agreement, but it will do everything to find ways to circumvent US sanctions," Hayman said.
