WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Majority and minority leaders in the US Senate agreed on Thursday to put forward conflicting proposals to end the government closure, which has now entered its second month, but chances of success in reopening government agencies are slim.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democrat leader Chuck Schumer agreed on Tuesday on trial rounds.
The first vote will be on a bill to secure funding for all closed branches of government until September, including the draft border fence with Mexico demanded by US President Donald Trump.
The second vote will aim to bridge the gap by proposing a government funding until February 8 to allow for a debate on border security and immigration, and avoid postponing Trump's state of the union address to Congress, AFP reported.
Each bill requires 60 votes to pass in the 100-seat council, a high threshold given the sharp partisan divide and accusations of responsibility for the closure.
"Republicans are unlikely to vote on temporary budget funding, and even if they do, the president will not sign it," said a Republican deputy to the council.
But the leader of the Democrats said the vote "could get us out of the quagmire we are in," encouraging Republicans in particular to support the proposal to close the gap, to open the government temporarily.
