(Reuters) - Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said on Saturday that financial and administrative corruption had burdened the Iraqi state and nearly represented half of its work.

"The fight against corruption is almost half the work of the state," Abdul Mahdi said. "We must move to the country in terms that have not been previously reported in this field, unify the efforts of supervision, accountability and inspectors and organize its work to be more effective."

This came during his chairmanship today a meeting of the Supreme Council for the fight against corruption at its headquarters in the Iraqi Supreme Criminal Court.

"During the meeting, the main issues and files were reviewed, the mechanism of the inspectors' liaison with the council, the methods of evaluation and receipt of reports, the formation of a system for receiving complaints and intelligence, as well as organizational and administrative orders for the Council's work," a government statement said.
