The US Senate has pushed legislation that reaffirms support for allies in the Middle East and includes new sanctions on Syria and a move to fight a movement that calls for boycotting, divesting and punishing Israel for its policies toward the Palestinians.
Democrats had blocked legislation in the council during the 35-day partial closure of the government, saying the Senate should first consider legislation to restart government departments.
But after agreeing on Friday to end the closure until at least February 15, most Democrats joined Republicans in backing the start of the bill.
The procedure still has several steps to become law and may never reach this stage. Even if approved by the Senate, it must also be approved by the House of Representatives, which controls the majority of Democrats.
The bill includes clauses to impose new sanctions on Syria and ensure security assistance to Israel and Jordan. These items are seen as an effort to reassure US allies after President Donald Trump abruptly announced last month his intention to withdraw troops from Syria quickly. Ending / 25
