US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan arrived in Kabul on Monday for a surprise visit as the United States holds peace talks with the Taliban.
During this visit, which was not announced in advance for security reasons, the minister will hold a series of meetings, most notably with President Ashraf Ghani, who the Taliban refuses to negotiate with him to consider him a "doll" in the hands of the United States.
Shanahan has been acting defense secretary since the beginning of this year, replacing Jim Matisse, who resigned in protest at President Donald Trump's announcement of his intention to withdraw US troops from Syria.
The visit comes after the United States announced that its envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, would start a six-nation tour, including the war-ravaged country, to facilitate dialogue between the parties to the Afghan conflict. Ending / 25
