WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a resolution ending US support for the Saudi-led coalition in the Yemen war as many MPs sought to pressure President Donald Trump to tighten his policy toward the kingdom.
But the 248-to-177 vote would not suffice to overcome the veto veto that Trump pledged to use against the resolution on the powers of war.
Democratic and Republican lawmakers nearly two weeks ago put forward the resolution as a way to send a strong message to Riyadh about the humanitarian disaster in Yemen and to condemn the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
But the US administration and many of Trump's Republicans in Congress said the decision was inappropriate because US forces were providing support including refueling aircraft and not providing support for combat troops.
The administration also said the measure would harm relations in the region and weaken US ability to prevent the spread of extremism.
The Senate is expected to vote on the resolution within 30 days.
The Senate approved the previous version of the resolution by 56 votes to 41 in December, but it was not put to a vote in the House of Representatives where Republicans were the majority until Democrats took control of it on January 3 after significant gains in the November elections The second.
The United States supports the Saudi-led air campaign in Yemen with refueling missions in the air as well as support for information gathering and targeting.
The Senate vote in December, the first time that one chamber of Congress approve a decision to withdraw troops participating in the military operation under the War Powers Act of 1973.anthy 1
