South Korea resumed its imports of Iranian oil in January after a four-month hiatus, customs data showed.
The world's largest oil importer received a six-month exemption from US "sanctions" on Iranian oil exports in November. But South Korea did not resume imports immediately, mainly for issues related to payments and insurance, Reuters said.
South Korea, one of Iran's biggest customers in Asia, imported 227,941 tonnes of Iranian crude in January, or 53,676 barrels a day, according to data from the customs office. That is far less than 950,000 tons of Iranian crude a year ago.
Overall, South Korea shipped 12.46 million tons of crude oil in January, or 2.94 million barrels per day, down 5.9 percent from 13.25 million tonnes a year ago, according to customs data.
Oil shipments from Saudi Arabia, the country's biggest oil supplier, fell 4.8 percent to 3.51 million tonnes in January on an annualized basis.
Meanwhile, South Korea's imports of US crude increased nearly threefold to 1.12 million tons in January, compared with 394,331 tons a year earlier. This reflects a strong demand for US oil as supply of the Middle East shrinks.
The Korea National Oil Corporation is due to release final data on South Korea's imports of crude oil later this month. Ending / 25
