(Reuters) - About 33 illegal immigrants have been detained in the north-west of the country, security sources said on Saturday.
The official Anatolia news agency quoted the sources, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media, as saying that the local gendarmerie had launched an information-based operation, seizing five separate groups in Kerklarli province near the border with Bulgaria.
The migrants, who have Afghan, Iraqi, Iranian and Pakistani nationalities, were preparing to cross illegally into Europe, the sources said.
Turkey is a major transit route for illegal immigrants trying to reach Europe.
More than 265,000 illegal immigrants were detained in Turkey last year, according to data from the Turkish Interior Ministry.
