US President Donald Trump said Thursday that his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam had not resulted in an agreement over North Korea's demands to lift US sanctions.
"Basically they wanted to lift the sanctions altogether but we can not do that," Trump told reporters after the talks in Hanoi were shortened. "We had to pull out."
However, Trump said Kim assured him that he would continue to stop nuclear and missile tests.
Asked whether a third summit had been agreed with Kim, Trump told reporters: "No, we do not agree ... we will see if it happens."
For his part, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a news conference in Hanoi that he hoped the two sides could move forward.
"They asked Kim to do more but he was not ready to do that," he said.
The announcement of the impasse, though Kim said he would not have attended the Vietnam Summit with Trump if he was not ready to disarm nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula.
He also welcomed the opening of an American liaison office in the North Korean capital Pyongyang.
"There are people who welcome the meeting and others are skeptical," Kim said. "I will do my best to make a good outcome" in talks with Trump.
Trump, however, said he was in no hurry to reach a nuclear deal with Kim, citing the strong relationship between the two sides and he had great respect for Kim and North Korea.
The Hanoi summit comes eight months after the historic Singapore summit in which Trump and Kim agreed to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, but the deal still faces several obstacles, experts said.
