US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Wednesday that he will make a new tour of the Middle East, including Lebanon, Kuwait and the Zionist entity.
"I will visit Beirut, Kuwait and (Israel)," Pompeo was quoted as saying by The National newspaper in a report.
"The time for the visit to Beirut has not yet been determined and it will be his first visit to Lebanon since he took office in April," the diplomat said. "Veteran diplomat David Starfield arrived in Beirut on Tuesday to make arrangements for the visit. He met with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil.
"The purpose of the visit will focus on the US engagement with Lebanon on Iran and Hezbollah and on security, defense and economic issues between the two sides. The US $ 70 million annual assistance is expected to be provided to Lebanese state institutions," she said.
"Although some members of the US Congress are calling for a review of the aid package, there is strong support in Trump's administration to continue military support for the army as a counter-strike against Hezbollah," said Randa Salim, a fellow Middle East scholar. "As in Iraq, US support for the government and the armed forces provides a necessary balance to balance Iran's influence in both countries without necessarily succeeding in significantly diminishing this influence." Ending / 25 z
