A coalition of lawmakers from the province of Basra on Sunday called on the federal and local governments to develop quick and immediate solutions and to form a ministerial crisis cell to avoid the disaster of water floods in their governorate.
MP Najah al-Mayahi said in a joint press conference with other deputies that "tomorrow will see waterfalls of water from the provinces heading to Basra, according to the cable of the Directorate of Civil Defense in the province."
"The areas north of Basra and more than 40,000 dunums of agricultural land are currently being damaged and sinking lands and houses," she said, stressing that there was no strategic plan by the Basra government and the central government to address it.
