The Ministry of Industry and Minerals revealed that the government has prevented the importation of several consumer goods for their domestic availability and the possibility of manufacturing them inside the country.
"The Ministry of Industry and Minerals has been proactive in extrapolating the market and trade movement and identifying the manufactured materials inside Iraq, which can be fully covered by the local need," said Alaa Mousa, Director General of the Industrial Development and Organization Department at the Ministry of Industry and Minerals. Measures have been taken to recommend a number of food products, including juices, beverages, soft drinks, bottled water and beverages of all kinds. "
"The ministry issued all laws and regulations to protect and prevent the importation of juices, refreshments, mineral water and beverages of all kinds," the statement said.
He explained that "the issuance of the Council of Ministers' decision to protect these products by the end of 2017 and the Council of Ministers and through the Committee on Economic Affairs to form a committee called the Commission Order Diwani No. 14 to consider the prevention of the importation of materials covering the production of the full domestic need and issued its first decisions in September of 2018 ban the import of juices, refreshments, carbonated water and bottled water. The decision was implemented 45 days after its issuance in November of the same year.
"The continued entry of these products from outside Iraq to the operational problems allow the border crossings to smuggle these materials in spite of the import ban by a decision of the Economic Affairs Committee and approved by the Council of Ministers pointed out that the House of Representatives initiated within the federal budget law for 2019 According to Article 60, "The importation of food products, beverages, dates, fruits and vegetables, which have a similar domestic product that covers the needs of the local market, is prohibited."
He added that "the Ministry of Industry and Minerals carried out all its duties by submitting recommendations to the Council of Ministers to protect domestic producers and manufacturers of these materials and was proactive in taking all measures related to the protection of these products, especially that all the possibilities and technological means available within the country to produce them and meet the local need and export surplus to outside Country ".
He pointed out that "Iraq has about 1000 plants to produce such materials," calling at the same time, "all parties involved in cooperation to implement the decisions, especially the Kurdistan region and provincial councils."
