A source close to the Iraqi government that the decision of the US president not to extend the exemptions from sanctions on Iran, may put Baghdad in an embarrassing situation, although Iraq is not directly concerned with this decision.

The source told Sputnik that his country does not import oil from Iran, but only imports gas to generate electricity and some agricultural crops that do not fall into the sanctions.

He added that "Washington gave Iraq additional time to import gas from Iran a while ago, but Washington may put Iraq in an awkward position at the end of this deadline, considering that Iraq needs to supply gas from Iran to operate some of its electrical stations."

"President Donald Trump has decided not to reissue sanctions on Iran when it expires in early May," the White House said in a statement.
