Iran is still committed to the multilateral nuclear agreement despite the US withdrawal from it last year, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said, describing Washington's escalation of sanctions as "unacceptable."
"We exercise maximum restraint despite the fact that the United States withdrew from the comprehensive joint action plan in May," he told his Japanese counterpart Taro Kono at the start of their meeting in Tokyo.
"Iran is not seeking a clash in the region but has always defended and will defend its interests strongly," Zarif said.
Zarif added that "Japan's foreign minister stressed his country's adherence to the nuclear agreement and its desire to continue its diplomatic ways to contain the tension in the region.
