Google has suspended some transactions with Chinese company Huawei, which require the transfer of hardware, software and technical services except those publicly available through an open source license, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Sunday, a blow to the Chinese technology company, which the US government sought to ban the deal With it all over the world.
A spokesman for Google said that existing owners of Huawei phones will be able to use and download updates to applications provided by Google.
"We are committed to this and are reviewing the implications," the spokesman said.
"For our users, Google Play and the security protection provided by Google Play Protect will continue to work on Huawei's existing devices," the spokesman said.
The administration of US President Donald Trump on Thursday added Huawei Technologies to the list of banned companies and imposed immediate restrictions that made it very difficult for the company to do business with its US counterparts.
The Commerce Department said on Friday it was considering reducing sanctions on Huawei "to prevent disruptions to existing network operations and equipment." It was not immediately clear on Sunday whether Huawei's access to mobile phone programs had been affected.
Huawei was not immediately available for comment.
There was also no immediate comment from representatives of the US Department of Commerce.
Huawei will continue to access the free operating system version of Android through an open source license for anyone who wants to use it. Google says there are about 2.5 billion active users of Android devices around the world.
Huawei said it has spent the past few years preparing for an emergency plan by developing its own technology if it is prevented from using Android. Some of the technology is already used in products sold in China, the company said.
