Iranian and Iraqi officials reached an agreement to resolve problems and resume activities at the Sumar border market after a one-week standoff.
The head of the border crossings, Kazim al-Aqabi, to "joint cooperation between the Iranian and Iraqi sides to resolve some of the problems that impede the export process through the border market Sumar."
"An agreement was reached during the joint meeting on the interests of the two sides and truck drivers and workers in both countries benefit equally from this market," he said.
He stressed that "all official border officials and markets in his country have been instructed to communicate with the Iranian officials to resolve issues and problems between them and prevent the exchange of goods between the two sides.
"The Sumar border will be added to the list of official borders of the country within the next three months," said Shahriar Haidari, director general of Iran's official border.
"The Sumar region is a strategic and important border for Iran and Iraq," he said. "The preliminary stages of this project have already been completed, and the transit and exchange of goods between the two countries will soon take place.
Haidari said the two sides agreed to "create the right conditions for the businessmen of both countries to obtain their legal interests equally."
This comes after the decision of the Iraqi authorities last weekend to prevent Iranian workers from carrying out their activities in part of the Sumar market, which led to the suspension of work in this border market.
Iranian exports last year through the Sumar border market to Iraq amounted to 138 million tons, equivalent to 242 billion dollars.
