The US administration is focusing on building an international consensus following attacks on oil tankers in the Middle East that Washington blamed on Iran, US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan said on Friday.
"What we and Ambassador Bolton and Minister Pompeo focus on is building an international consensus on this international problem," Shanahan told reporters outside the Defense Department, referring to National Security Adviser John Bolton and Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump blamed Iran for an attack on two oil tankers at the entrance to the Gulf, despite Tehran's repeated denials of responsibility, fueling fears of a confrontation in the vital oil shipping corridor.
When Trump was asked how he planned to deal with Tehran and prevent further incidents of this sort, he told Fox News: "We'll see." Trump said any move to close the Strait of Hormuz, used by Saudi Arabia and other Gulf producers to export crude, would not last long.
British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Friday that Iran was "almost certain" responsible for attacks on two oil tankers on Thursday in the Sea of Oman, despite Tehran's denials.
"Our own assessment led us to the conclusion that the responsibility for these attacks is almost certain for Iran," Hunt said in a statement. These latest attacks are a continuation of a pattern of Iranian behavior that is destabilizing and poses a major threat to the region. "
A US official said on Friday that Iranian boats prevented the withdrawal of Norwegian tanker «Front Altair», which was attacked Thursday in the Gulf of Oman.
"Iranian speedboats prevented two boats trying to connect the tanker and pull it away from its diameter after it was damaged by the attacks," the US Free Channel quoted an unnamed US official as saying.
For his part, the head of the operator of the Japanese oil tanker, which was targeted by an attack also in the Gulf of Oman, that the ship's sailors saw a "flying object" before a second explosion on board.
"The crew said the ship was hit by a bird's body ... and they saw it with their own eyes," Yutaka Katara, the head of Japan's Coca-Cola Coorgos, told reporters.
The US military released a video clip on Thursday, saying it showed the involvement of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the attack on the Norwegian tanker Front Air and the Japanese tanker Cococca Carides in the Gulf of Oman at the entrance to the Gulf. According to the US military, the video shows members of the Revolutionary Guard on board one of their patrol boats as they approach the "Cocucca Carides" after the two carriers saw blasts and removed an unexploded ordnance from the tanker's structure.
Iran considered it to be used as an "appropriate" scapegoat. "These accusations are worrying," Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said, adding that blaming Iran for Thursday's attacks was "appropriate" for US officials. Tehran also said that the United States and its allies in the region, such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Iran's foes, were "beating the drums of war" by making those accusations.
German Foreign Minister Haiku Mas said on Friday that the video released by the United States was not enough to prove that Iran was behind the attack on the oil carriers in the Gulf of Oman. "We can understand what is being offered, of course, but for me it is not enough to make a final assessment," the German minister told reporters during a visit to the Norwegian capital Oslo.
It also called on the Russian Foreign Ministry not to blame any party for the incident in the Gulf of Oman until the investigation is completed. "We consider it necessary to refrain from hasty conclusions and to blame any party for their involvement in these incidents before a comprehensive and impartial international investigation is completed is unacceptable," the Russian ministry said in a statement on Friday. Sputnik »local. The statement stressed that «Moscow strongly condemns the attacks that occurred regardless of who was behind». "We are concerned about the tension in the Gulf of Oman ... and we see evidence of the artificial tension of the situation ... and urge all parties to exercise restraint," he said. It also called on Moscow not to use the incident that shook the global oil market, to fuel the situation against Iran.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterich said his "good" efforts to resolve the current crisis in the Gulf region were "available," but at the moment he saw no possibility of dialogue. The statement came in a joint press conference with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit at the UN headquarters in New York.
Guterich reiterated his strong condemnation of the attack, stressing that "the responsible party should not bear responsibility for the attack." Abul-Gheit called on "Iranian brothers to be cautious and change the course they are currently pursuing, because no one will be safe if anything happens", without giving further details.
