[size=45]US President Donald Trump has asked other countries that import oil from the Gulf region, such as China and Japan, to protect oil shipments they buy from countries in the region, adding that the United States has limited strategic interests in the region.[/size]
[size=45]Trump said US goals for Iran were to "prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons and preventing them from adopting terrorism."[/size]
[size=45]"With regard to Iran's threats to close the sea lanes used to transport a large proportion of oil exports from the Gulf, the United States does not care about that," he said.[/size]
[size=45]He said the United States is now the world's largest oil producer, so it no longer needs oil in the Middle East. "We do not even need to be there."[/size]
[size=45]He went on to say that the US armed forces should not be relied upon to ensure freedom of navigation in the waters adjacent to the Iranian coast.[/size]
[size=45]"Why do we protect the sea lanes on behalf of other countries for years without pay? "These countries must protect their ships in this dangerous region."[/size]
[size=45]As far as Iran is concerned, Trump said his only demand was for Tehran to stop seeking nuclear weapons and to abandon "supporting terrorist groups." "The US demands from Iran are very simple," he said.[/size]
