US newspaper accuses Iraq of striking Saudi oil facilities

June 28, 2019 - 11:06 PM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US officials have concluded that the attack on planes on Saudi oil pipelines in May originated from Iraq rather than Yemen, prompting Iraqi officials to ask Washington for more information in support of the allegation, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
The newspaper said US officials familiar with intelligence about attacks on aircraft in May said the source in southern Iraq, indicating that this probably refers to the factions in the region backed by Iran.
Saudi Arabia has admitted a booby-trapped car bomb attack on Saudi oil facilities after the Houthis in Yemen announced it had hit Saudi facilities in a "major military operation."
Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said two pumping stations for the East-West pipeline, which carries Saudi oil from oilfields in the eastern region to the port of Yanbu on the west coast, were attacked by a suicide bomber.
