Libya is close to signing a port development agreement with an American company
The talks have been going on for about a year to create a port in Sousse, while it will be a rare investment in Libya. Most of the country has been in anarchy since the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
"The Guidry Group and the State of Libya through the Port Authority signed the concession agreement officially on May 13 to develop a multi-purpose deep water port in Sousse, .
"The next steps of the project will include the development of all technical, financial, operational and commercial arrangements."
"There has not been a final agreement yet, but 90 percent of the work has been completed," said Salah al-Hassi, head of the Eastern Ports Authority and head of the monitoring committee at the port of Sousse.
"We are now in the final stage of signing the contract. "The guidelines have been approved and adopted and now we review the terms of the contract, but we mean 90 percent of the completion."
Neither side gave details.
The two sides had in February invested $ 1.5 billion in the project.
The final signing of the contract would be a major achievement for the parallel government in eastern Libya, which has no international recognition. The UN-backed government is based in Tripoli in the west of the country.
The port of Sousse is supposed to become the main port for the entry of goods into Libya
