[size=18]The handover ceremony of the remains of 48 Kuwaiti nationals killed during the occupation of the former regime of Kuwait in 1990 began in Basra on Thursday.

The victims were recently found in a cemetery in the desert of Samawah.

The handover takes place through the Safwan border crossing southwest of Basra province, in the presence of official delegations from both countries.

The Iraqi Ministry of Defense is responsible, where the remains were transported by military aircraft to the Shuaiba military airport in Basra, in preparation for the expected handover.

On Tuesday, Defense Minister Najah al-Shammari received the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq Janine Hennes Blaschaert, who is responsible for the Kuwaiti missing persons file.

For her part, the representative of the United Nations expressed "her happiness for the Ministry of Defense to provide all possibilities in helping the success of the United Nations mission in Iraq in cooperation with the Kuwaiti side and the Red Cross."
