American Petroleum Institute: Crude stocks fall 3.5 million barrels

US crude inventories fell 3.5 million barrels to 439.8 million barrels over the week ending August 16, according to the American Petroleum Institute.
Gasoline inventories also fell 403,000 barrels, compared with analysts' expectation in a Reuters poll of an increase of 169,000 barrels.

Distillate inventories, which include diesel and heating oil, rose 1.8 million barrels, compared to expectations for a 314,000 barrel rise.
