BAGHDAD: The Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs, Oil Minister, Thamer Ghadhban, said the ministry intends to build a new line to transport crude oil extracted from the fields of Kirkuk province to the Turkish border.
This came in a joint press conference with Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmaz, who arrived in the Iraqi capital Baghdad hours ago, for official talks with Iraqi officials.
Ghadhban said: "In today's meeting we follow together the implementation of what was agreed upon during the visit of (Prime Minister) Adel Abdul Mahdi, his delegation to Turkey and his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan."
On May 15, the Iraqi prime minister paid a visit to Turkey, during which he agreed to start the procedures for signing a joint document in various fields between the two countries.
He added: "What has been agreed upon is to consolidate relations between the two countries and develop them to higher levels of economic and commercial activity, and energy relations in the field of oil, gas and electricity."
He added: "In addition to the activity of Turkish companies and known for their high capabilities in the field of civil works and oil and gas projects."
He said he informed Minister Donmaz of the intention of the Ministry of Oil and with the support of the government, to build a new pipeline to transport Iraqi oil and crude from Kirkuk to the border with Turkey "in the same old track."
He explained that "one of the advantages of this pipeline will be its ability to receive oil from the northern system, which will branch from the Basra-Aqaba."
"These are important strategic options for sustaining the export of Iraqi oil, and the multiplicity of outlets is a very important strategic, and what confirms the true events in the region threatening the main traditional routes in the Gulf region," the minister said.
"We discussed many things, as two ministries in energy affairs, and there is also a common desire between the two countries to connect electricity," Ghadhban concluded.
