Baghdad / Wael Nehme
At a sensitive time, MPs in the coalition participating in the government re-raised the issue of getting US troops out of Iraq.
Political parties see it as an attempt to ease pressure on Tehran.
Signed 53 deputies belonging to the blocs (Badr Organization, Asaib, State of Law, and others) in the second session of the new legislative chapter, the day before yesterday, to add a paragraph in the agenda of parliament to evacuate foreign troops.
On the other hand, the agenda of yesterday's session was devoid of that paragraph, while the signatories say they will continue to pressure the government and parliament until they respond to their demands.
The pro-Iraq team seeks to achieve its goal through three phases defined by certain time limits, during which the number of troops is determined and then determine their actions and finally evacuated from Iraq.
Parliament had implicitly agreed four months ago that Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi was responsible for dealing with those forces and driving them out of the country.
The agreement came after a major disagreement between the political forces in determining the fate of those forces operating within the international coalition, and the fear of the return of "IS".
"The reopening of the issue of removing US troops is part of the psychological warfare between Tehran and Washington," said an MP from the Reform Alliance, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the information.
The MP considered that the timing of raising the subject "is to lift the siege on Iran and mix the papers after the incident of targeting oil facilities in Saudi Arabia."
Baghdad has been trying for months to distance the country from involvement in the expected war between Iran and the United States by committing to disengage from some armed factions close to Tehran.
In favor of sovereignty
But Mohammed Karim al-Baldawi, a deputy for Asaib and one of the signatories to the request for the expulsion of foreign forces, told Al-Mada yesterday that what he and his colleagues are doing is "in the interest and sovereignty of Iraq."
The MP stresses that "Iraq can not remain forever dependent on foreign forces whose presence is a violation of sovereignty."
The Prime Minister had said earlier that the Iraqi government "did not specify the duration of those forces in the Strategic Framework Agreement signed in 2008 with the US side," adding then to a question to MP Faleh al-Khuzaie in May, that "the agreement referred to the organization of activities During the temporary presence of US forces in Iraq, the Department of State - the Department of America is the rapporteur of the Supreme Committee to follow up and monitor the general implementation of the agreement.
Abdul Mahdi then answered questions by the deputy about the status of US forces in Iraq, which was published in a number of news sites, that the number of US troops in Iraq "amounts to 6132 out of 8956 of the total number of international coalition forces on Iraqi soil."
Earlier this year, MP Sabah al-Saadi, submitted a proposal to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohammed Halbousi, to end the security agreement with Washington, known as (Sofa) and the evacuation of US troops from Iraq in a period not later than a year starting from the entry into force of a law regulating those procedures, before he Political forces are backing away from that demand under pressure from the fear of the return of ISIS and the weakness of Iraqi military capabilities.
3 stages
On the other hand, says MP Mohammed al-Baldawi that "Iraqi cadres are able to train our troops in the basic issues," noting that it can remain trainers in the aspects of "training on the aircraft (F-16), tanks and the US and other weapons."
The deputy refers to the process of removing US forces, according to the view of the Coalition, the political umbrella of the Popular Mobilization, to which Baldawi belongs, based on several stages: "First determine the number and whereabouts of these forces, and secondly determine which of these forces is important and necessary to train Iraqi units, Third, unnecessary forces are evacuated and dispensed. "
Al-Baldawi asserts that the committee "to preserve sovereignty" set up by parliament a few days ago, will monitor the performance and actions of the government in this aspect, noting that "the Joint Operations Command is now conducting an inventory of foreign forces in Iraq and we are monitoring it."
The moves come as members of the PMU accuse the United States of cooperating with Israel in targeting PMU ammunition positions.
The MP from the conquest that his bloc "will continue to pressure the government and parliament in order to bring out foreign forces, although the presidency of the House of Representatives to put the proposal in the agenda of yesterday's meeting."
