BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's foreign minister's adviser called on Saturday for a political solution and a move away from the emotional side of the border demarcation between Iraq and Kuwait.
This came during a symposium held by the Frattin Center for Strategic Studies and Research today, entitled (Security Council resolutions and the issue of maritime borders between Iraq and Kuwait).
Al-Haj Hammoud stressed the importance of completing the implementation steps of Al-Faw Grand Port because of its economic importance, as it represents the parallel artery of the Iraqi economy after oil, but represents a real alternative to oil. Note that Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has recently ordered to wait for the issue of rail linkage with neighboring countries.
Al-Haj Hammoud reviewed the unfair Security Council resolutions issued after the Saddam aggression against Kuwait, which unfortunately was endorsed by the former regime (the government and the National Council), which represents a bad legacy of the current political system. By adopting documents and maps, the Commission did not acquire the legal status of international law due to the absence of a baseline between Iraq and Kuwait and relied on maps (Cicero).
He said during the symposium that Iraq should resort to arbitration if necessary if the Kuwaiti actions on the maritime borders unilaterally and according to the constitutional powers that ensured the government to do so.
For his part, MP Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani, head of the center, said that the aim of this seminar is to submit this file to research and review and to provide the concerned with accurate information and ways to take future steps during the bilateral negotiations and meetings between Iraq and Kuwait. All and to ensure his national interests.
He pointed out that Kuwait stands at the forefront of these countries, which had a clear position in support of the political process since 2003, but this will not be at the expense of Iraq's interest, especially in the subject of drawing borders, which is tainted by many observations by virtue of the UN Security Council resolutions and implemented arbitrarily unilateral in Then.
During the seminar, the topic of discussion was enriched with many inquiries and questions that were answered professionally and academically.
