Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim on Wednesday called for the speedy introduction of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) into force.
"Iraq wishes to participate actively in strengthening the role of international conventions and instruments in the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation," Hakim said in his speech at the 11th Article 14 Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. He expressed "concern that the Israeli entity will not ratify as one of the eight remaining parties to Annex II of the Treaty," saying that "its accession would be a step to support arrangements for the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East." .
"Iraq reaffirms the importance of voluntary compliance with the moratorium on nuclear test explosions," Hakim said, adding that it "represents an important path to achieving the goals of the treaty."
"We welcome the bilateral and multilateral efforts to find a peaceful, diplomatic and long-term solution to the nuclear crisis with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea," he said. A world free of nuclear testing for the benefit of present and future generations
