Kuwait is considering joining the International Alliance for the Protection of Maritime Navigation in the Gulf, Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister Khalid Al-Jarallah said Tuesday.
Al-Jarallah said in a press statement that "Kuwait will reveal its official position on joining the coalition after the completion of studying the details."
This came in light of a state of concern prevailed in the Kuwaiti arena due to tension in Iran's relationship with the United States and a number of regional and international allies, a situation expressed by more than a senior Kuwaiti official.
According to Kuwait insiders, Kuwait's deliberate consideration of joining the coalition reflects the difficulty of making a decision. The establishment of the alliance is directed primarily against Iran as the greatest threat to the security of navigation in the region, while Kuwait has good relations with Tehran, and does not want at the same time to deviate from the general Gulf orientation towards participation in
Establishing a mechanism to ensure navigation and ensure the flow of the region's oil to world markets.
"Kuwait has not officially announced the position of joining this alliance," Jarallah told KUNA.
He explained that "his country has participated in meetings on the development of a general framework for the coalition, and it will continue to participate in any meetings related to this subject."
Countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, have announced their intention to participate in the International Coalition for the Protection of Navigation in the Gulf, which the United States is leading efforts to establish to cover the area of operations of the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf and the Sea of Oman and Bab al-Mandab.
The Alliance could be an appropriate umbrella for Kuwait directly concerned with the protection of shipping lines, which mainly transport oil to world markets, which is the backbone of the Kuwaiti economy.
Kuwait has expressed exceptional concern over developments in the region and has taken practical steps, in preparation for its possible outcome, including increased preparedness, security and military readiness and arrangements for the provision of food and other essentials in preparation for an armed conflict scenario.
