The tariffs came into effect at midnight and include planes produced by Airbus, French wine and Scottish whiskey.

The US tariffs are 10 percent on aircraft imported from the European Union and 25 percent on other products, including wine, cheese, coffee and olives, according to a list published by the US Trade Representative's Office.
