[rtl]President Donald Trump has agreed to expand the US military mission to protect oil fields in northeastern Syria, US media reported.[/rtl]
[rtl]The Associated Press, citing informed sources, said Trump's decision followed a meeting on Friday with defense officials, as discussions centered on keeping part of US forces in Syria to protect oil fields in the east from ISIS. Under the new plan, the troops would protect a large swathe of Kurdish-controlled territory stretching some 90 miles (145 km) from Deir ez-Zor to Hasakah in northeastern Syria, but the number of soldiers for the mission is still undetermined, while other officials likely A total of at least 800 military personnel, including about 200 at al-Tanf (US base) in southern Syria.[/rtl]
[rtl]The agency noted that such a move by President Trump raises a number of "difficult legal questions" on whether the US military will be able to hit Syrian forces or others in the event of a threat by them to control the oil fields in eastern Syria.[/rtl]
