The head of the national wisdom movement, Mr. Ammar al-Hakim, called on the UN Security Council to take a firm stand on the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.
"In the strongest terms of condemnation and condemnation, we condemn the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the continuation of the assassination of the leaders of the Palestinian factions," Mr. Ammar al-Hakim said in a statement received by Euphrates News.
He called on "the United Nations and the Security Council to take a firm position on the bombing, blockade and systematic arbitrariness against the patient Palestinian people."
On Tuesday, Israel killed a senior Islamic Jihad leader in Gaza, accusing him of being the mastermind of recent attacks against Israel.
In response, Islamic Jihad militants fired some 200 rockets into Israel throughout Tuesday.
Palestinian militants also fired rockets into Israel on Wednesday in the second day of escalating cross-border violence, making people rush to shelters with sirens sounding, although there were no reports of injuries or loss of life.
Other Israeli air strikes against Islamic Jihad targets in Gaza killed eight other Palestinians.
Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, seems far from fighting so far.
A diplomatic source said the UN Middle East envoy was on his way to Cairo to begin mediation to end the violence
