After being formally accused of bribery, fraud and treason, is the Netanyahu era in Israel over? 580Accusations against Netanyahu have not been made in the history of Israel to any prime minister while in power (Getty Images)
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's accusation of corruption at a time when parliament is looking for a figure to form a new government raises questions about the imminent end of the decade-long reign of the king.
For the first time in its history, Israel wakes up on Friday and has a prime minister charged with corruption, fraud and dishonesty in three cases.
Some had speculated that Attorney General Vikhai Mandelbunt, a friend of Netanyahu in the past, would drop charges against the prime minister, who has spent the longest term in office in 10 years. But the attorney general put an end to months of speculation and charged Netanyahu with all possible charges in cases in which the prime minister was named.
    Calls for resignation
The voices in Israel demanding his resignation have begun to emerge amid accusations that have been described as serious and unprecedented in Israel's history, in conjunction with a deep political crisis.
The "Blue White" party led by former army chief of staff Benny Gantz, Benjamin Netanyahu, demanded the immediate resignation of all official posts.
This came in a statement issued by the party, which is competing with Netanyahu for the leadership of power in Israel, the day after the Attorney General's decision to submit indictments of bribery, fraud and dishonesty against Netanyahu.

    What does Netanyahu say?
Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing and says he is the victim of a "campaign of persecution" motivated by political media and left-wing politicians seeking to oust him.

Netanyahu said on Thursday after the attorney general's decision to indict him that corruption allegations against him amounted to a coup and that investigators did not search for the truth but were pursuing him. Netanyahu claimed that the investigation against him was tainted by bias.
Proponents of Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party have accused the Israeli justice system of bias and have argued that receiving gifts from friends is not against the law.
His legal team argues that criminal investigations into links between politicians and news media include a threat to press freedom, a cornerstone of any democracy.

    Will the trial begin soon?
It may take several months before any of the cases in which Netanyahu accuses him reaches the court, and he can make a deal on a settlement rather than appear in court.

    His allies in the Knesset said they were seeking parliamentary immunity from prosecution;
Netanyahu's knockout could come from within his own Likud party. The party must decide whether to support it to the end or drop it in favor of another candidate for prime minister.

Several party officials, including Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz and Culture Minister Miri Regev, have voiced support for Netanyahu, but others have remained silent since the indictment.
Prior to Mandelblit's announcement on Thursday, former minister Gideon Sa'ar, who has a strong support within Likud, called for party leadership elections before a third round.
"I think I will be able to unite the country and the nation," Saar said.

Ofer Zalzberg, senior Middle East analyst at the International Crisis Group, speaks of a "major emerging rebellion" within the Likud. "It seems that Netanyahu's opposition within the party ranks will increase in the coming days and weeks," he told AFP.
Will he be thrown in jail?
The penalty of conviction for bribery is up to 10 years' imprisonment or a fine or both. The penalty for fraud and dishonesty is imprisonment for up to three years.

    Will there be political consequences?
Netanyahu has dominated Israel's political landscape for more than a decade, but he and his main centrist rival, Benny Gantz, failed to form a government after holding elections twice this year without a decisive result in April and September, leaving the country in a political and economic stalemate.

If there is no political breakthrough in the next three weeks, Israel will face a third round of elections, a result that is not desirable for many.

If Netanyahu remains prime minister after the election, he will not be legally obliged to resign, but he will have to resign if he is ultimately convicted and exhausted, but can stay in office for the duration of the proceedings, including appeals. After being formally accused of bribery, fraud and treason, is the Netanyahu era in Israel over?
