Report: Elite corruption and outrageous wealth escalate anger in Iran
American political researcher Majeed Rafi` Zadeh said that Iranian leaders often attribute the poverty in their country to external factors, such as US sanctions on the nuclear program and banking systems, but the fact confirms that financial corruption, favoritism and cronyism are crucial factors in the country's high levels of poverty.
Zadeh explained that many Iranians began criticizing the regime instead of the United States, and increasingly expressing anger because of the sharp gap between the rich and poor, and the economic inequality between the elite and the Iranian public.
The American researcher recalled that one of the most important reasons behind the revolution of 1979 was the anger over rampant financial corruption, noting that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei showed sympathy with people when they complained of corruption more than two decades ago, and now many Iranians question the differences Between the current political system and the Shah’s regime.
The researcher cited an example of Hussein Faridoon, brother of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and a member of the Party for Moderation and Development who was arrested recently on charges of bribery and financial crimes, and in December 2017, charges of corruption and fraud were brought to Hamid Baqai, former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
He also indicated that the deputy governor of the Iranian Central Bank for Foreign Exchange, Ahmed Araghchi, was arrested in 2018 along with others in a corruption case worth $ 200 million, as well as the financial empire of the Supreme Leader himself, known to be worth at least $ 95 billion.
The American researcher explained that these are only a few examples of the things that have angered Iranian society, as many people are angry about the luxurious life of the elite and their families, while ordinary people struggle to cover their expenses so that they can feed their children and enter schools.
He pointed out that despite criticism[size=13]Iran to the West It is well known that they send their children to live and obtain educational certificates from there, in addition to that the Iranian elite members keep their properties in foreign accounts.
He concluded his article by saying that more than 40% of Iranians live below the poverty line, and many of them feel disappointed as a result of the gap between the poor and the rich, corruption, nepotism and widespread patronage.
