{Baghdad: Al Furat News}, the Iraqi ambassador to Tehran, Saad Jawad Qandil, confirmed that Baghdad is negotiating with Russia to buy the S-300 missile system for air defense, pointing out that it is possible to purchase the system.
"This issue (the purchase of the S-300) is on the table of discussions between Russia and Iraq, and Iraq can buy this system," Qandil said in a press interview.
He added, "Iraqi-Russian relations are very good, in light of Baghdad's keenness on good relations with all neighboring countries."
And Ambassador Kandil added, "Iraq is keen to diversify the sources of weapons, and we have arms contracts with Russia."
Earlier, the head of the Defense and Security Committee in the Iraqi parliament, Muhammad Reza, announced that Baghdad had resumed negotiations with Moscow on purchasing S-300 systems.
Iraq has been trying to buy Russian air defense systems since 2017, but the threat of economic sanctions by the United States continues to hinder negotiations.
