Iraqi and American officials: ISIS is regaining its activity near the Iraq-Syria border

Translation / Hamed Ahmed
According to an American military official and Iraqi security officials, ISIS carried out two attacks on Iraqi sites on the border with Syria, pointing to the organization's exploitation of the current situation in the country as well as the decision of the US-led international coalition to suspend its missions against ISIS to shift its efforts and interest to protect Iraqi bases and coalition forces Amid tensions with Iran.
Iraqi officials said that the organization's militants carried out attacks on an Iraqi security site near the border with Syria Monday night, killing an officer and wounding four others, and one of the attacking gunmen was killed during clashes with security forces.
The officials added that the organization's militants used light weapons in their attack on the security site, which is 45 km north of the Al-Waleed border crossing with Syria.
On Sunday, security officials said, ISIS militants tried to attack another security post near the Syrian border, but they fled the scene after Iraqi security forces retaliated against them.
Army Colonel Shaker Al-Rishawi said, in an interview with CNN News, “ISIS is known to exploit the situation. We know that the organization will take advantage of the current situation of tension between America and Iran to its advantage. ”
Rishawi, and another Iraqi security official from Anbar Province, said that ISIS had increased its activity in the border region.
The increase in ISIS activity comes after escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, which led to the suspension of operations against ISIS. Where last week, Iran launched a number of missiles at two Iraqi military bases that included American forces in response to the American air strike with a drone plane at Baghdad airport that killed the Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and the deputy head of the crowd, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis.
The American military official said that the assessments of the attacks on the border sites indicate that they were carried out by ISIS, in an early indication that the remnants of the organization's militants believe that they can take advantage of the unstable situation and not clarify the matter whether the American forces will remain in Iraq. The Iraqi parliament had voted earlier this month on a non-binding government resolution calling for the removal of US and other foreign forces from the country. On the other hand, the US-led international coalition announced a temporary suspension of its operations against ISIS, shifting its focus on protecting military bases that include US and coalition forces against any possible retaliatory attacks.
Other coalition countries, including Germany and Britain, have begun withdrawing their forces from the country, while the coalition has not set a specific date for the resumption of its activities against ISIS after its suspension. These forces may not be clearly visible as is the case with the American forces, but their work and their role in supplying the momentum against ISIS is always behind the scenes, as their activities include providing intelligence and information and in terms of logistical support and training, all of which are very vital in the war against ISIS.
"The decision to suspend the missions is a measure of our ability to continue training our partners and support their operations against ISIS, and this issue is subject to continuous review," the coalition said in its statement. We are still determined to remain as partners of the government and people of Iraq who have welcomed us into their country to help defeat ISIS. We are still prepared to regain all our attention and efforts once again for our common goal of ensuring a permanent defeat for ISIS. ”
NATO, on the other hand, suspended the mission of its training mission in Iraq through a statement issued in which it indicated that the NATO training mission is suspending its training efforts for the local Iraqi security forces.
