Protests escalated, in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and the cities of southern [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] on the eve of the deadline set by several coordination groups of the popular movement, considering today 20 January a deadline for politicians and officials in the country to implement the demands of the demonstrators.
Hundreds of people gathered in the aviation and liberation arenas, which are located in the heart of Baghdad, after most of the demonstrators were absent during the past days.
They burned tires and cut major roads, including Muhammad al-Qasim Street and at Jisr Al-Sinak.
Security forces used tear gas canisters to limit the expansion of demonstrations.
Protesters responded with stones, killing two people and wounding 17 others, including a number of security personnel, one of whom was an officer, according to security and medical sources.
One of the demonstrators from Muhammad al-Qasim Street said that this escalation is the beginning. We want to deliver a message to the government that the deadline will end today and get things out of control. "Do not procrastinate (because) the people are conscious," he added, addressing the politicians.
In Nasiriyah, hundreds of protesters flocked to the Haboubi Square in the city center. Protesters cut key roads and bridges in the city, where government and educational institutions continued to be closed.
Protesters also vowed to cut off the highway that links [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] southern city of Basra, through Dhi Qar Governorate, if the government and political blocs continue to neglect their demands.
"We have started escalating from now on because the government has not responded to our demands," said Haider Kazem, who was protesting in Nasiriyah.
"We have set a deadline of seven days, since last Monday and ending tonight, represented by the formation of an independent government capable of saving Iraq."
Today, Monday, a medical source revealed the position of the martyrs and wounded of the demonstrators, on Sunday, January 19/2020.
The source said, "The Medical City Hospital, Sheikh Zayed Hospital and Al-Kindy Hospital are free of martyrs and wounded."
He added that "the nervous system hospital, has (20) cases of suffocation only."
A security source in Dhi Qar Governorate confirmed today, Monday, that the number of wounded protesters with live bullets increased by 8 protesters.
A local source said, "An unidentified wheel pickup type circled the city of Nasiriyah and opened fire on a number of protesters riding a motorcycle (Stota)."
And the source said, "The shooting caused the injury of 8 protesters, one of them in critical condition."
Similar protests escalated in other cities, including Najaf, Diwaniyah, Kut, and Amara, all in the south of the country.
Most of them witnessed the closure of government and educational institutions and the demonstrators cutting main roads and bridges with burning tires. Protesters also burned the headquarters of the Al-Wafa Movement, which is chaired by the former governor of Najaf, the current deputy Adnan al-Zarfi.
The protesters had burned a party headquarters belonging to the "Dawa Iraq" party, in Najaf, last night.
In the city of Karbala, large numbers of students went out in support of the demonstrators in the south of the country. Demonstrators went to the parliament building and closed its entrances.
"We went out in support of the sit-ins ... We demand a fair and non-partisan prime minister," said student Ayat Mowaffaq.
She added: We want a homeland that contains us, like the rest of the people, and we will continue these demonstrations until the demands are met.
